You and your friends are likely familiar with Shark Tank [described by Wikipedia as “An American business reality TV series that…”shows entrepreneurs making business presentations to a panel of five venture capitalists (investors in start-ups) called “sharks” on the program, who decide whether to invest in their companies.”]

Yet, even ambitious international students like you may be surprised to learn that Barbara Corcoran, one of the most successful female US real estate professionals ever, was fired from Shark Tank before she’d filmed even a single episode. Corcoran, who’d co-founded the Corcoran Group at age 23, eventually sold her real estate brokerage for $66M, and shortly thereafter (in 2001) exited the company. Like most successful professionals, though, Corcoran’s achievements did not come easily. Not only was her father a drinker, but undiagnosed dyslexia led Corcoran to be labeled “the dumb kid” in school, as the second of 10 children. Despite graduating college with a degree in education, Corcoran had a total of 20 jobs by the time she was 23! Driven to become her own boss, however, and following a side job renting apartments, the Corcoran Group was born in 1973, following a $1,000 loan, and the rest is history.
 

While Corcoran has publicly shared many memorable quotes, a particularly meaningful one for aspiring talent like you and your classmates is: “Don’t you dare underestimate the power of your own instinct.”  Its implications for our young professionals? Cultivate your  ability to hear – and heed – your own inner voice, amongst a sea of social media-driven, societal, and/or cultural messages- and learn to take risks based on its guidance.
