Dear Students,

While successful coaching outcomes require development of a number of favorable mindsets (positive, open, growth/learning-oriented, resilient), even ambitious international students like you must take care to continuously nurture these attitudes, lest they become diminished in the face of challenges.

Relatedly, our coaches can play an important role in encouraging your positive “self-talk.” What do we mean? To be specific, roughly 80% of the estimated 16,000+ words you speak every day are considered to be “self-talk.”* Through self-talk, young talents like you reinforce (or deflate) your own self-confidence, self-efficacy, ambition and commitment to goals. Thus, it’s critical for aspiring professionals, like you and your peers, to learn to manage yourself (and your feelings) through the inevitable challenges of the job application process, and on the job, by developing a healthy stream of “self-talk”.

As author Minda Zetlin points out in the Inc.com article below, it’s constructive for eager-to-succeed individuals (yes, this means you!) to recognize that you control the emotions you assign to a setback, as well as how you choose to frame it and move beyond it.

‘Notice the way you’re talking to yourself,’ says brain expert Josh Davis.
