23.05.2024 Today’s Insights on the Benefits of Volunteering, from a Source in New Zealand
Dear Students,

By this time of year, even some of the most ambitious among you and your international student peers have come to the conclusion that it might be best to identify an “out of the box” workday activity if you want to be productive this summer. Maybe you feel you’ve exhausted the Open (public) and Hidden (networking-based) job markets and even some non-profit or not-for-profit opportunities. What does that leave? Volunteering!

While some of you might balk at this choice, volunteering (a concept originated hundreds of years ago) actually offers enormous potential benefits to college and graduate students like you. In addition to the many mentioned in this excellent article (setting aside its country of origin), international candidates like you and your friends can leverage volunteering to:

  • Build self-confidence
  • Grow your English language skills and comfort
  • Meet others who could become valuable contacts during your fall job search
  • Initiate a productive experience to speak about during interviews next fall
  • Make friends and have fun!
We encourage young talent like you to take advantage of such possibilities this summer – you will no doubt be very glad you did!

Enjoy your evening,

Amy-Louise

P.S.I read the amazing statistic that follows – that volunteers are 27% more likely to get jobs – many years ago – and it’s worth considering, as well, whether or not an aspiring talent lives in a rural area. https://www.umt.edu/experiential-learning-career-success/about-us/elcs-news/24.1.10.blog.php#:~:text=Individuals%20who%20volunteer%20have%20a,higher%20likelihood%20of%20finding%20employment.
