03.07.2024 Today’s Insights from BetterUp: Careers that Won’t be Automated by AI (at least for now)
Dear Students,
There’s little doubt that you, as an ambitious international student, are asking – and/or anxious – about the potential impact AI will have on the attainment of your professional objectives, as you begin your career in the West. And, honestly, it would be inappropriate for you to not consider this.
At the same time, experts report that there are definitely some fields that are less likely to be automated away anytime soon. Additionally, Elizabeth Perry ACC, Senior Global Coach Community Manager at BetterUp, highlights a recent study by economist David Autor noting that “60% of today’s workers have occupations that didn’t exist in 1940.” Why is this relevant? It points to the fact that many professional options that candidates like you may choose to undertake also have yet to be created, opening up new arenas you may not have even considered yet.
Importantly, within this context, the above article emphasizes the range of “power” skills that are likely to continue to be essential – perhaps even more essential in the “Age of AI”- for new grads like you, moving forward, exemplified by:
-
“Interpersonal skills to help build effective human relationships with coworkers and clients, like emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and conflict resolution
-
Communication skills to construct successful teams, like active listening, nonverbal communication, and confidence
-
Thinking skills to transform concepts into winning strategies, like critical thinking, brainstorming, and creativity”
In this spirit, regardless of the omnipresence of emerging technologies, our coaches will continue to reinforce the value of the MCI program and the myriad of competencies around which they coach aspiring professionals like you, emphasizing that whichever role you choose to begin your career, and whichever professional avenue you ultimately pursue, the insights, skills and perspective you will learn through our experienced coaches will stand you in valuable stead.
Which new career options might you consider today that capitalize on such abilities?
Thoughtfully,
Amy-Louise
