13.07.2024 Today’s Insights on Careers for Students Passionate about Math
Dear Students,
Are you an applicant who says s/he loves math, yet has no idea how you’d like to use this interest or skill?
We’d like to reassure ambitious international students like you not to fear – with our coaches’ support and guidance, you will find your niche! And even if you have not specifically majored in math, there are many professional avenues in which to apply mathematical thinking and reasoning.
What’s interesting about math is that it’s a skill that cuts across a broad range of professional functions, making it very versatile. It’s also flexible, in that if an aspiring talent like you begins in one area, and you later decide that you are more interested in another math-related direction, it’s often very intuitive to switch gears.
Do young professionals like you and your friends need to be geniuses to pursue a career using math? Not at all. There are many resources for building the requisite “hard skills,” which will nonetheless shift over time, in any case.
It is critical, however, that students like you capitalize on our MCI coaches’ expertise in developing soft or “power” skills, to set you up for success in any role you choose. When reviewing the three articles below, it quickly becomes clear that technical prowess is not the ticket to advancement in a math-related career. Instead, candidates like you, who aspire to leadership roles, need to master ways to apply your passion through developing both personal and interpersonal competencies, including those below, and many more:
-
Communication skills – both written and verbal
-
Analytical skills
-
Critical thinking
-
Listening
-
Teamwork
-
Leadership
-
Initiative
-
Curiosity
-
Creativity
-
Problem-solving
And the list goes on.

Whatever you do this weekend, our coaches hope that it “adds up” to a great time!
