05.09.2024 Today’s Inspiration from MassDevice.com: Michael Mahoney, CEO of Boston Scientific
Dear Students,

It’s been said that “Sales are not about closing deals; they are about opening relationships.”

Having begun his career in sales and marketing, this statement is truer for no one else but Michael Mahoney, the CEO of Boston Scientific, a $13B global healthcare technology leader with operations in 130+ countries. Mahoney, who isn’t embarrassed to admit his early experiences “in the field,” shares that: “My first job was actually selling nuclear medicine cardiology systems to every little hospital in the Carolinas…I’ve been in a lot of sales roles, marketing roles, sales and service roles on the commercial side.”

Mahoney built his career at GE Medical Systems, leveraging a BA in Finance and later an MBA, to become President and CEO of Boston Scientific in 2012 and Chairman, as well, in 2016. Yet, Mahoney, who continues to hold the marketing reins, “oversees all aspects of the global development, marketing and sales of the company’s broad portfolio of medical device solutions.” Like all successful CEOs, Mahoney is mission-driven, with CVS Health President and CEO Karen Lynch citing that “Mike’s focus throughout his career [has been] to drive improvements in health outcomes and increase access to care,” when Mahoney was honored with an appointment to their Board in September of 2023.

With its focus on medical technology, Boston Scientific has its work cut out for itself in the coming decade. And while Mahoney has 25+ years of industry experience behind him, it was his 2001 stint of “volunteering” to run a joint venture that might have best tested his “real-time leadership skills” and resilience. Given the many ongoing lawsuits in the healthcare sector, the coming years will not be an easy ride, yet the challenges Mahoney faced as J & J’s Worldwide Chairman of the Medical Devices and Diagnostics Division, while overseeing 50K employees and 7 franchises, have prepared him well.

Mahoney’s simple, yet profound guidance for aspiring professionals like you? According to MedicalDesignandOutsourcing.com, the 55-year-old AI aficionado has asserted that “We want leaders to run our companies, not managers.” For ambitious international students (perhaps even you or your friends?) who do not yet appreciate the difference between these two concepts, coaching is a great place to learn!
