22.10.2024 Today’s Inspiration from Mary Daly, Federal Reserve CEO and President, in NobHillGazette.com
Dear Students,
There’s no question it can be tempting for an ambitious international student like you to (incorrectly) assume that to launch a successful career in the West, you need to reflect the profile of prominent Western professionals in as many ways as possible.
What’s exciting is that this isn’t necessarily the case. Mary Daly, CEO and President of the Federal Reserve of San Francisco for the past 6 years, is decidedly not what we might think of when imagining a professional among the highest ranks of American finance. As she stated to Fortune, “I’m short, I’m female, I’m gay, and I come from a crooked path background.” Yet through Daly’s 28-year progressive career with the Fed, she has built a respected reputation as an economic researcher, business leader and public speaker.
Candidates like you would probably not have guessed this from Daly’s early years. Not only did Daly drop out of high school at age 15, but she also left home at 16, cobbling together hourly jobs at Target and donut shops to try to make a full-time salary. But Daly’s inherent drive and intelligence eventually kicked in, and following the completion of a GED, she earned a B.A.in Economics and Philosophy and then a Master’s and even a Ph.D. in Economics.
Daly credits her professional approach to a fierce courage, a commitment to each individual’s being him or herself and the willingness to “risk” sharing one’s true values, ideas and aims with the world. She’s known for inspiring words to young professionals like you: “The message is risk, really risk. Be yourself. Create.” Daly seeks to engender innovation, which inevitably disrupts the status quo. And yet, no real evolution – in business or life – can occur without it. Perhaps a bit tongue-in-cheek, Daly puts it this way: “I’m a complete deviant. All creative work breaks new ground.”
This is not a bad way for a student or new grad like you, who wants to make a global impact, to enter the competitive marketplace, though, and it’s clearly worked for non-conformist Daly.

When Jerome Powell, chair of the Federal Reserve, speaks, people listen. And one of the voices he’s listening to is Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco President and CEO Mary C. Daly, who is also a member of the rate-setting Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC).
