08.11.2024 Today’s Insights on Product Management Careers, from TheProductManager.com
Dear Students,
Have any of you considered a career in product management? You’ve no doubt heard about growth within this space, particularly in the tech area, over the past few years. According to several sources, product management jobs are actually increasing by 30-40% per year, as well!
The article below paints a very comprehensive picture of what entering and working in this field may be like for aspiring professionals. Yet, an ambitious international student like you, who is new to the US, may wonder just what the role of a product manager – and its corresponding career trajectory – consist(s) of. To provide context, the article quotes the following definition:
“A product manager is the person who identifies the customer need and the larger business objectives that a product or feature will fulfill, articulates what success looks like for a product, and rallies a team to turn that vision into a reality.”
Per the description, product management is clearly a multifaceted career path, perfect for a new grad like you, seeking a diverse role and a blend of critical thinking, analytical skills, problem-solving ability and curiosity on one hand, along with strong leadership, communication, influence, persuasion and strategic, long-term thinking on the other. As a former product management professional, I recall that colleagues and I used to define our roles as being like the “hub of the wheel,” regularly connecting with a myriad of stakeholders (the “spokes”) from research to product design to promotion and finance, etc. to get the product on the market.
And, although technology product management gets the bulk of the press these days, our coaches would like to ensure that young talents like you are aware that you can also launch and build global product management careers within other sectors, such as financial services, healthcare, and consumer goods (in which I was fortunate to work).
Here’s to everyone having a “product-ive” evening!
Best,
Amy-Louise
