Dear Students,
Who among you might want to explore careers in Educational Technology? Expected to grow by roughly 11% over the next decade (according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics), the Edtech field is well “worth a look” by any ambitious international student (yes, even you!) seeking to combine a passion for technology with an equally strong interest in helping others learn how to use it.
While the term education, originally meaning to “train or mold,” joined the English language in the 16th century, the word technology, which came into use about a century later, reflected “a study or discourse on the application of practical crafts and mechanical techniques.” Today’s educational technology, while clearly distinct from that of the 17th century, nonetheless impacts a wide range of individuals learning practical ways to use sometimes-complex systems, devices and/or processes, within an academic context.
Edtech may appeal to young professionals (like you and your friends) aspiring to global leadership roles, for a host of reasons, including its diversity, its creativity, the speed with which it is growing and evolving, its collaborative nature and simply its emphasis on benefiting the lives of others. New grads (even you!) can also pursue this intriguing space from a variety of university backgrounds, and entry-level roles typically do not require a highly specific degree to begin doing so.
With so many companies (like $690M Duolingo) in the game (pun intended), there’s a great chance that a student pursuing this path (perhaps yourself?) will have expanded opportunities over time (just check out the BuiltIn article below, about the “27 EdTech companies changing the Way We Learn”)! Since the current international Edtech profession is estimated at 100,000-strong, candidates like you, who may be curious to explore this arena, can likely gain familiarity with it through networking.
Here’s wishing everyone an energetic leap into a very educational 2025, in which technology serves to support, (yet not distract) you from leveraging your distinctive advantages as a human!
Best,
Amy-Louise
