07.01.2025 Today’s Insights from McKinsey – The Case for Human-Centered AI
Dear Students,
At 99 years old, McKinsey is known as the largest of the MBB firms (McKinsey, Booz Allen and Bain) and focuses mainly (according to Wikipedia) on corporate “operations and finances.” Hence, it’s particularly interesting to read McKinsey Senior Partner Lareina Yee’s interview with James Landay, Stanford Computer Science professor, covering meaningful observations, issues and perspectives surrounding the use of GenAI in the workplace.
While the podcast text below is lengthy, and some of it covers areas now considered fairly common knowledge, the interview touches on topics you’ll find to be worth exploring as a university student or new grad. Since ambitious international students like you will soon be making highly-impactful technology-related decisions within global firms, it’s valuable for you and your friends to think through such issues, within coaching, from different angles.
Notable among these include:
-
The value of cross-discipline identification and integration of knowledge in constructing and leveraging GenAI tools
-
The importance of clarifying assumptions about language and definitions across borders
-
The trade-offs between probabilistic vs deterministic systems, and why the latter are prone to creating hallucinations
-
The increasing personalization of learning, including the concept of “AI Flash Cards,” tailored to individual context and location
-
The growing complexity of creating and deploying “ethical” AI, as the technology evolves, and
-
Younger students’ roles in interaction with “machines,” meaning the most appropriate/effective relationship(s) between the AI and the learner
Maximizing generative AI’s promise while minimizing its misuse requires an inclusive approach that puts humans first.

This McKinsey podcast, along with other recent articles, continues to drive home the value of clear, strategic, deliberate thought-leadership, as the estimated .5B people around the world (per World Bank Blogs) who have been exposed to GenAI to date proceed to integrate it further into their professional (not to mention personal) lives.
What a great opportunity this presents for today’s innovative Gen Zs – and yes, that includes YOU – to undertake during an internship or following graduation!
Here’s to “generating” a great evening for yourself tonight!
Best,
Amy-Louise
