Dear Students,

What does it mean to be an introvert?

The Oxford English Dictionary puts it this way:

a shy, reticent person.
Ex: “I’m an introvert and don’t like public speaking.”
Yet, in reading further, the term is also defined as:
a person predominantly concerned with their own thoughts and feelings rather than with external things.
Ex: “Introverts seek out and enjoy opportunities for reflection and solitude.”

Why is this distinction important? In the West, an ambitious international student (like you) may quickly note how media venues tend to extol individuals who come across as having strong views, use strong voices and sometimes even proudly and publicly display strong emotions. You may thus wonder if there is really a place for a more understated, even contemplative, type of candidate – perhaps like you and/or your friends – to launch a progressively responsible – and respected – career in a global company.

Fortunately, there is no need for concern, as there are many roles and career paths for young professionals like you who tend to focus inward.

When considering any of the 15 professions in the above article (and many others that can be identified elsewhere), aspiring talent (this means you!) should also keep in mind that, as stated in this article, “Even though certain jobs are introvert-friendly, they still require strong communication skills and may involve public speaking.” That’s exactly why communication and other personal development coaching, delivered by experienced Western professionals (some of whom even consider themselves to be introverts) can be so helpful in surfacing such feelings and ironically helping you to leverage them to your success, as you graduate and embark on your career.

For those of us (myself included!) who are among the 25%-57% of the population (depending on the  source) who self-define in this way, it’s encouraging to know that one doesn’t need to be “loud” to “leave a lasting impact” on potential professional connections and contacts.

Enjoy a quiet evening,

Amy-Louise
