23.08.2024 Today’s Insights on the Publishing Industry in the Age of AI, from Publishing.Com and Others
Dear Students,
Perhaps you are a candidate who loves various forms of reading, yet fears that entering the publishing industry in the Age of AI would be, delicately speaking, a “bad decision.”
Contrary to popular belief, as noted in the first piece (from Hull) below, “The global publishing industry, valued at $89.25 billion in 2022, is booming – and is predicted to grow at six per cent, year over year, for the next five years.” Within the context of this good news, ambitious international students like you, of course, will nonetheless experience many changes in publishing and journalism in the near future. There’s no question that AI tools, particularly GenAI, will play a large role in shaping the actual words communicated and read.
Yet, as argued in the second article (from Convit) below, “…only [actual writers and] editors can create something completely new.” Put another way, human brains, and thus creativity, innovation, curiosity/inquisitiveness, critical thinking , written communication and other related power skills will still be key factors impacting who gets hired, who gets published and distinguishing what sells. Thus, would-be writers, authors, columnists and publishers should “stay in the game,” reflecting the use cases exemplified in the third article (from Fadel) below.
On the flip side, as communicated in the fourth article (from Publishing.com) below, “…authors who leverage AI tools will soon be replacing authors not using them.” And thus, it’s a case of strategically applying an “If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em” mentality, with candidates who deploy strategic thinking, analytical skills, commercial awareness, resilience and research initiative leading the way in the field. If a young professional like you is an aspiring entrant into this career direction, we’d also encourage you to review and assess the impact of the trends noted in the fifth article (from Woodwing.com) below, which will enable you to best develop and demonstrate your sector savvy within interviews.
Our coaches are here to ensure that students like you continue to consider “booking” careers in publishing and journalism, if one of these is indeed your passion!
Best,
Amy-Louise
