Dear Students,

In the “Wild West” of Silicon Valley, personal fortunes can swing upward or downward by huge numbers within short periods of time. But some companies, and some executives, have more staying power than others. Satya Nadella, the Indian-American businessman who serves as both the CEO and Executive Chairman of Microsoft, is a great example of an enduring leader. Taking over the CEO reins in 2014 and the Chairman title in 2021, he was responsible, per Wikipedia, for building and running the company’s computing platforms, as EVP of Microsoft’s Cloud and Enterprise Group, just prior to assuming the highest roles.

Formative challenges, both professional and personal, have nonetheless helped shape Nadella’s values and leadership principles along the way. In 2014, he had the courage to publicly – albeit embarrassingly – retract a sexist comment. What’s more, Nadella’s son was born a legally-blind quadriplegic with cerebral palsy, who died at the age of 26. Becoming the father of a special-needs child was a “turning point” in his life, however, increasing Nadella’s level of empathy for others.

Microsoft is “below them, above them, around them,” Satya Nadella said about OpenAI in what’s being called a “new war slogan” and a “baller quote.”
